Genesis 26-50 (extra credit)

Please read (or at least skim through) the stories in Genesis 25-50. Which of these stories do you find most interesting? Explain how that story is particularly appropriate as an example of Torah "law," or explain how that story shows the Torah to be something more than just a law code.

  1. I find the thirty-eighth chapter of Genesis interesting. The law explored here is based on heirs passed down from fathers. If a man were to die it was his brother's responsibility to sleep with his brother's widow so that the deceased man would still have a genetic lineage trailing from him. The story shows that brothers aren't always interested in continuing their brother's line but it was the law. -Zach Kuhlman

  2. i find the 27th chapter very interesting, because it is a very popular story from the old testament, a story that shows how wicked people can be, deceiving their own family. Isaac doing what he thought was good and blessing his first born child actually ended up being deceived by his wife and other son. I look at this story because i dont understand why this happened really, why they did it, was fr the benefit of Jacob but why they could go against the law of their father and the law of their God and lie seems so wrong and shows exactly what not to do to people.

  3. I think the story of Joseph and his brothers is very interesting. I really like and connect with that story because even though Joseph was sold into slavery by his own family, God still had a great plan for him and everything turned out ok. I think this story shows that the Torah is more than a law code because it illustrates how God has a great plan for everyone. His plan might not make sense, but even the worse of circumstances is still within his control.

  4. I think that the story in genesis chapter 22 is the most interesting due to Abraham being willing to sacrifice his son for god. Basically, as a child, i never could understand this....but now reading it i see that it is all about the immense devotion we are all required to give to god, and not to our lives here on earth. At first it seems almost wrong that god would ask this of someone, but after you understand the overall message, it makes total sense.

  5. The Torah gives us many signs of laws of forgiveness and truthfulness. While I was reading, I read into the stories as examples of God's law code. However, I agree with Brianna that the story of Joseph is a great illustration of how Torah is more than a law code as is the story of Esau forgiving Jacob (Genesis 33) There is something meaningful in this story and others throughout Genesis that have deeper meaning than any present day man made/proclaimed 'laws' or 'codes.'

The story of Jacob going to Bethel to build an alter is interesting because he didn't do this on whim, he was ordered to by god himself. He told Jacob to go amongst the polytheists and show them the light. Thyis is God giving the law, not man, so it is much more then a rule book.

  7. The story that was interesting to me is Genesis 41 (Joseph placed in charge of Egypt)the reason I chose this is that it shows the most important opportunities come at the least time you expect them, and to be ready for anything and the opportunities God may present to you for the good. So the "law" is to trust strongly in God and God will eventually give you a opportunity to better yourself and to know God is there with you, and to just be ready for you opportunity.

  8. I think that chapters 37 through about 45 where it talks about Joseph being sold by his brothers because of their jealousy is very interesting. Especially later when he gets out of jail and becomes a ruler of Egypt. He finally sees his brothers again, but they don't recognize him. Later after finding out information that he longs to know he reveals himself. I find the whole process that takes place in this story very interesting. The normal reaction for most people would not be to treat these guys well who attempted to kill you and then sold you into slavery, but Joseph goes about things in a very different way. I think this story carries with it more than just a law code, but examples of how living your life a certain way can turn out.
